The heroes of Shakespeare’s tragedies fit certain criteria. They are all flawed in a way which is both a blessing and a curse. They are usually of high rank or powerful in society, which their ‘flaw’ has helped them sometimes obtain. The heroes also have external pressures that make them make decisions that they believe at the time are the right ones, but turn out to be destructive either to themselves, others, or both. It is most common in the tragedies that one or more of these elements combine to lead to the eventual downfall of the hero.
